Restore & optimise gut health

Are you looking to

restore your gut health?

The majority of individuals who seek out advice from a registered Nutritional Therapist are looking to restore gut health. You may have some combination of bloating, gas, indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea. Or perhaps you’ve been diagnosed with IBD, IBS or SIBO.

Whatever the diagnosis, the gut isn’t functioning optimally, and if the gut is ‘off’, then the immune system is off (70% of the immune system is in the gut), the mood is off (important neurotransmitters are produced in the gut) and brain function is off (the gut is considered the ‘second brain’).

You get ill more often, you might struggle with anxiety or depression and you can’t think clearly – you have brain fog and poor memory / concentration.

Improve The Gut Microbiome and enhance Your Overall Health

You are NOT what you eat; you are what you DIGEST & ABSORB.

You might have the best diet, but if your digestion (which begins in the brain and works all the way down to the colon) isn’t working optimally, your body won’t digest or absorb nutrients from the food you eat.

How To Restore Your Gut Health

The 4R Approach

The 4R Approach has been used successfully for years in Nutritional Therapy to restore gut health and is tailored to each individual.

  1. Remove: remove anything that is making you sick such as unwelcome microbes, ‘bad’ bacteria, candida overgrowth, mycotoxins, parasites, food intolerances, chemicals, toxins etc.
  2. Replace: replace factors needed to optimise your digestion such as digestive enzymes, bile salts or hydrochloric acid as well as add back in vital nutrients which become depleted as a result of a leaky gut.

3. Re-inoculate: this involves re-introducing good bacteria into the gut to establish a balanced gut flora and healthy terrain. This is accomplished by taking probiotics and eating fermented foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, miso, kombucha or kimchi. Prebiotics also help by feeding and promoting the growth of good bacteria.

4. Repair & Rebalance: the final step consists of taking nutrients to repair and support the gut lining. Diet plays a big role in this step, along with supplementation to repair the intestinal tract lining. Some examples of supplementation used include L-glutamine, zinc, Vitamin A & D, aloe vera, resveratrol, turmeric, DGL and omega-3 fatty acids.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RESTORE GUT HEALTH?

Building a healthy microbiome can take 3-6 months if the correct healthy habits and supplementation are adopted. The goal is to not only restore your gut health but also to empower you with the knowledge to maintain and optimise your gut health.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY GUT IS HEALTHY OR NOT?

Some indications of overall gut health are:

1

How often do you have a bowel movement? 1-2 BMs daily is ideal.
2

How do your bowel movements look? Are they well-formed, easy to pass? Do they float or sink? What colour are they?
3

Do you have any pain when you pass a bowel movement?
4

How long does it take for food to move through your gut? We call this gut transit time.
5

Do you have a lot of bloating or gas?
6

Are you eating gut friendly foods or taking probiotics?

How can I check

My Gut Health?

The most common types of nutrition testing check overall gut and microbiome health through stool or urine testing. These tests can be ordered and sent straight to your home, where you collect the sample and send it directly to the laboratory for testing. We review the test results with you and put together a personalised protocol based your results.
